General Description

Our main research function is to conduct experimental and clinical studies on blinding diseases especially those affecting Filipinos.

The Committee on Research of the Department, formally established in 1988, acts as a policymaking body tasked with the coordination of the different research activities of the department The committee, headed by the Vice Chair for Research is responsible for formulation and implementation of the research agenda of the Department, with the following basic premises:

  1. "To encourage and undertake research", as one of the reasons of existence of the University of the Philippines Manila,
  2. "To generate knowledge and develop technology through biomedical, behavioral, and health system research" as guided by the research goals of the UP College of Medicine, and
  3. "Conducting experimental and clinical studies and blinding diseases, especially those affecting Filipinos", based on the objectives of the Department.

The departmental research output consisted of 22 completed researches, 22 published papers and 17 ongoing researches for the year 2004. Among the published papers, three papers were published internationally; in the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, Ocular Immunology and inflammation and Opthalmology, while nineteen (19) were published in the Philippine Journal of Opthalmology. The paper of one faculty member, Dr. Harvey S. Uy, "Comparison of Fibrin Glue and Suture for Attaching Conjunctival Autographs After Prterygium Excision" was chosen as one of the Three Outstanding Faculty research papers and was presented in the 18th Faculty Research Forum.
